Pharmacovigilance (PV) is paramount to patient safety and is one most critical processes that must be managed by every pharmaceutical and medical device company.  It is a very complex business process with the numerous contributors and interfaces.

Unfortunately, years of evolving expectations and changing technologies have left life sciences companies and health care providers with fragmented PV business processes residing on poorly integrated data management systems.  In addition, system execution frequently straddles different departments and partners following their own rules for detection, risk profiling, and reporting.

This inherent complexity is being further compounded by the dramatic increase in the numbers of AEs reporting channels and the rising expectations for deeper insights for improving safety profiles as part of pre-marketing human factors studies and broader post-marketing surveillance.

At some point, most companies or providers will experience one or more of the following challenges:   failure to capture reported adverse events and sources, incorrect or inconsistent triage, lack of timely reporting of serious cases, incomplete case resolution, superficial trending and surveillance of medical literature, lack of robust risk management solutions, and poor regulatory reporting.

The consequences to patient safety and business impairment due to regulatory action can be severe.

It is time to modernize pharmacovigilance business process and technology.
